WATER-ON-WHEELS (ROLLER TANKS)

Patton Water-on-Wheels in Action

In many rural areas, millions of women and children in India struggle daily to transport the water they need. Around 1 out of 5 people in rural India do not have access to potable water and they have to walk 2-10 kilometres to access & transport water.

Drinking water is traditionally collected by women and children, and even the elderly, in 18-litre buckets which they carry on their heads over an extended period of time (3-9 hours). This causes neck and spinal injuries and is a serious health hazard. There is much scope for water contamination as the buckets usually don’t have covers and also there is significant water lost while carrying water in open buckets

So what is the solution? Our Water on Wheels Tanks. Introduced in districts like Darjeeling, Bankura, Purulia etc., this product has had a far reaching positive social impact. Some of its features are:

  • Water Capacity: 90 litres (5 times the average 18 litre-bucket

  • Drum Material: Food-grade Linear Low Density Polyethylene

  • Lid Material: Food-grade Linear Low Density Polyethylene

  • Handle Material: Powder-coated mild steel

  • Colour: Blue, black, yellow & more

  • Roller design & handle reduce physical fatigue/discomfort of transporting water across long distances

  • Long lifespan of 5 – 7 years

  • Durable – Designed for use in rough terrains

  • Easy-to-clean

  • Maintenance-free design, requires no replacement of parts

In addition to improving water hygiene, the product has many positive benefits. As the weight of the water is borne on the ground and distributed over a wide rolling surface, it saves effort, energy & time as it facilitates the collection of more water at one go. This precious time saved allows children & women the opportunity to pursue educational & economical activities.

We are happy to share this letter of appreciation from Khandal Vipra Vishwa Parishad for the Patton Water-on-Wheels Roller Tanks they had distributed in the Churu District, Rajasthan.

Pankaj Didwania (National Vice President, Khandal Vipra Vishwa Parishad) stated in his letter that many problems arising from this location that faces acute water crisis have been alleviated by the roller tanks. Earlier women and children would have to walk for hours, daily, to get access to potable water. Now, they have to make this trip only once in four days. The time saved has empowered the villagers of Churu and made a positive impact on their standard of living.
